For many Americans, this means acknowledging that sacrifice by celebrating their freedoms together with family and friends (perhaps with a cookout and pool party or two). By this thinking, saying "Happy Memorial Day" is totally OK. But some believe the greeting is inappropriate; the holiday should be a somber reminder of those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. It's not a day to party. What do you think?

Rather, Memorial Day was created to pay respect to the dead. By turning Memorial Day into the unofficial start of summer, we've erased the true meaning of the day. It's not appropriate to say "Happy Memorial Day," just as you wouldn't celebrate a loved one's funeral.

This is a time to remember our fallen; it should be a somber reminder of the brave sacrifice men and women have made to keep the United States a free and just society. Not a time to party.

magazine refers to former SEAL Kevin Lacz on the topic, who said:

> 'Memorial Day needs to be a solemn remembrance of the brave Americans who have laid down their lives for the freedom we cherish. Frankly, the mere act of putting on the uniform isn’t heroic. As Americans, we have begun to overuse the word ‘hero ‘ I stand by my claim that the real heroes are the men and women who don t come home. Memorial Day is for them.' #OkayToCelebrateYes, Memorial Day was created to honor those who sacrificed their lives. But what better way to pay respect to our fallen troops than to celebrate the holiday with loved ones and embrace the very freedom those soldiers died to protect?

As former Navy pilotKen Harbaughwrites in the , it's OK to say "Happy Memorial Day."

> This Memorial Day, I will head to the ocean as the sun is coming up. I will spend some time alone, and think about those who never made it back. Then I will return to my wife and kids and be grateful for my life. I will fire up the grill and invite friends over. And I will wish each of them a Happy Memorial Day, knowing full well that this day and the joy it brings are gifts I can never repay. Except, perhaps, by living a life full of happiness as my fallen friends would have wanted. Most of us get a vacation from work, have a barbecue with friends, and enjoy sales at the local store. These activities highlight what Americans enjoy most: leisure, friendship, and consumerism. So, it's a happy day. Strange. You'd think a day dedicated to people who lost their lives so that we could enjoy ours would be more reflective than a day of relaxation and shopping.

Some Americans actually have a different experience on Memorial Day. They visit the grave of a loved one; perhaps a family member who was killed in military ser...

(Getty Images)The difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day still seems to trip people up, although it shouldn't.

As a quick refresher, on Memorial Day, we remember those who died while serving our country. Veterans Day is intended to honor the service of all people who have worn armed services uniforms.

So, what do you say on Memorial Day to someone who might be struggling: a widow, a veteran or anyone who's been especially affected by a military member's death?

The website wrote about this very topic in May 2017, and the article has been recirculating lately, for good reason. "This common misconception, that Memorial Day is a time to thank veterans, is not in fact what the holiday is intended for," the site says.

Here are some ideas on what you can say instead. Try something like: Those seem preferable to:

It might be hard to approach any veterans you might know, but saying something meaningful really could make all the difference for someone having a difficult day.

Before you think this is splitting hairs, consider that what you say matters.

While it's certainly not "wrong" to wish someone a and it's safe to assume most people are well-intentioned, it seems as though taking a few minutes to say the right thing will mean much more.

After all, the day is about more than backyard parties and barbecues. Let’s prove it by taking a moment to examine our words.
