The group began marching around 8 p.m. Friday and made their way to the interstate as officers monitored the situation from afar.

Some of the protesters entered I-880 on the southbound side and started walking on the interstate as cars tried to avoid hitting them.

According to authorities as of Saturday morning, 60 suspected looters were detained for further investigation, 18 people were arrested by Oakland police and four others were arrested by other agencies during the protests.

Six Oakland police officers and seven other members of law enforcement were injured, according to preliminary information.

Early Saturday morning, the FBI confirmed to ABC News a contracted security officer with the Federal Protective Service of the Department of Homeland Security was killed and another was injured outside of the Oakland federal building.

The FBI, along with the Oakland Police Department, are now investigating.

It's unclear whether the officers' death and injury are connected to Friday's protests.

Saturday morning, there was heavy law enforcement presence outside the federal building.

Alameda Sheriff Sgt. Ray Kelly spoke with ABC7 News Friday night about the impact of what happened in Minneapolis on the whole country.

"What happened in Minneapolis is heartbreaking," he said.

He says for law enforcement who dedicate their life to community service, this "hurts your heart," and it's hard to regain trust from the public that took so long to build.

"One incident anywhere in the country has this gigantic ripple effect and it doesn't matter which patch you have on your arm, or what city you're from, the fact that you wear a badge, that you represent, in this case, something horrendous that happened to a member of the community."

Earlier Friday, Oakland Interim Police Chief Susan Manheimer said the department was aware of the demonstrations planned for Friday night and possibly the weekend in response to the in-custody death of

According to Manheimer, the department wants to voice that it understands the tensions within our communities and that it stands with the Oakland community as they receive this "disturbing situation" in Minneapolis.

She stressed that Oakland Police Department's role is to create safe places for freedom of speech and demonstrations.

"We as the police need to create that balance of ensuring rights of everyone to demonstrate and to have a safe place that they can voice their frustration," she said.

Manheimer added that she wants to be sure there is no violence or destruction in the community during these demonstrations and said police will take enforcement action if there is damage to property or violence.

About 60 people demonstrated peacefully Thursday afternoon.

The protest was underway by 3:55 p.m. No one was arrested and no one was cited. Police said officers did not have to use any force and no damage was reported.

The police officer who was seen on video kneeling on Floyd's neck was arrested Friday and charged with murder in a case that sparked protests across the United States and violence in Minneapolis.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Derek Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. Freeman did not provide immediate details, but said a criminal complaint would be made available later Friday and that more charges were possible.

In the video, Chauvin is seen kneeling on Floyd's neck as Floyd is on the ground. He gradually becomes motionless as Chauvin and three other officers ignore bystanders' shouts to get off him. Freeman said the investigation continues into the other three officers, but that authorities "felt it appropriate to focus on the most dangerous perpetrator."

VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED:

Freeman highlighted the "extraordinary speed" in charging the case just four days after Floyd's death, but also defended himself against questions about why it did not happen sooner. He said his office needed time to put together evidence, including what he called the "horrible" video by a bystander. He said he would not bring a case unless he had enough evidence to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – Friday night’s protest took a deadly turn in Oakland.

Two Federal Protective Service officers were shot and injured — One died overnight from gunshot wounds.

Thousands of protesters from around the Bay Area met in Oakland to protest the death of George Floyd.

A group of people broke into an Oakland Target on Broadway, and went through the store smashing windows and grabbing items.

KRON4 is hearing reports that the fire is still not out this morning and that other stores including Walgreens, a bank and Starbucks were also broken into and or set on fire.

The 7-11 located at 2350 Harrison Street was also reported to be vandalized and looted by protestors.

The protest in Oakland started at 8 p.m. Friday evening, some protesters met at City Hall.

Quickly the group grew in size from a few hundred to thousands overnight.

A Mercedes Benz dealership was vandalized and set on fire, a car was set on fire, and other cars were tagged with slurs targeting law enforcement.

Images pouring in from social media show a diverse mix of people out on the streets, chanting phrases including “Black Lives Matter,” and “I Can’t Breath.”

At some point through the protest, police were seen by those in attendance using some tactics against the protesters.

Also, these protests ended up on the I-880 freeway in Oakland. Some reports said that the Bay Bridge was even shut down for some time due to protest.

Here are some numbers from Oakland Police:

The Oakland Police Chief talked about the chaos erupting overnight.

“We have had demonstrations last night, and they started out peacefully and we stood with our community here in the city of Oakland to provide safe spaces and respectful spaces for our demonstrators. What we saw later on in the evening turned violent and disruptive and we want to call on everyone who would come to Oakland and stand with us to respect the memory of George Floyd and the community to ensure that they are peaceful and respectful to the city of Oakland and especially our downtown businesses which have been suffering since the pandemic began. We thank all the mutual aid and other agency partners that have helped us tonight, but as we have seen across the country, we saw damage and destruction here in the city. We will be back at it tomorrow, we stand with our community, and we want to ensure that everyone that comes to the city of Oakland is peaceful and respectful,” Chief Susan Manheimer said.

Some protesters say their message was not one of violence, although we saw it, but it was to convey a message that people are exhausted of these types of police killings of Black men.

The investigation into that officer that was shot and killed continues.

San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia, who previously made clear his feelings that the situation in Minnesota was uncalled for, said in a tweet that the department would not allow people to break the law.

Around 9:30 p.m. in San Jose a civilian vehicle that was allegedly disobeying police orders in the area of 6th and Santa Clara streets was fired on by Santa Clara Sheriff's deputies. The driver then backed up and hit two pedestrians. San Jose police homicide units were responding. It is not clear if the pedestrian was killed.

Meanwhile, a protest was underway late Friday in Oakland.

It is not clear who is behind the protest. Cat Brooks with the Anti-Police Terror Project said her organization is not endorsing Friday night’s protest but will help bail out demonstrators who get arrested.

18 hours ago 23 hours ago The protests come at a complicated time as the Bay Area continues to fight the spread of the coronavirus. Alameda County, which is home to Oakland, recently surpassed Santa Clara County for most coronavirus cases in the Bay Area.

Some Oakland business owners already struggling as a result of the coronavirus pandemic boarded up their windows as a precaution.

The death of the 46-year-old Floyd, who was recorded on video pleading for air as an officer knelt on his neck, has shocked the country, including police officers who are usually inclined to withhold comment.

The police officers’ unions of San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco issued a joint statement Thursday condemning the actions of the Minneapolis officers.

“What we saw on that video was inconsistent and contrary to everything we have been taught, not just as an academy recruit or a police officer, but as human beings,” the statement read. “We are equally disturbed by not seeing any of the other officers on scene intervene to prevent this tragedy.”

The officer, Derek Chauvin, 44, was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the case Friday.
